Originally co-written by Bob Layton (as well as finishing artist) and running for seven issues of Marvel Comics’ Iron Man, from December 1987 to June 1988, the comic story centered on inventive genius Tony Stark as he discovers that the same top-secret tech he used to create the Iron Man armor is now in the hands of several deadly super villains. Stark was wracked with guilt over the evil they’ve done utilizing the suit. In the face of objections from his government, friends, colleagues and fellow Avengers, Stark vows to use the power of Iron Man to bring take back what is rightfully his own.
With Robert Downey Jr.’s Stark dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the two-time Oscar nominee seemingly retired from the role, it’s currently unclear as to how the new television series will approach the material or update it with Don Cheadle’s as James Rhodes at the center of the story. There are rumors that another Bob Layton created character, Justin hammer, may also appear in this new incarnation of “Armor Wars”.
While “Armor Wars” was a huge hit when first published in July of 1988, it has continued to be compiled in numerous trade paperbacks and reprint comics over nearly four decades.
